What to do with fresh horse manure?

West Sussex, United Kingdom

I have 2 large carrier bags of very fresh horse manure. I know I can't use it for the garden yet, but what should I do with it? Shall I tip it in the compost heap or keep it separately in old compost bags perhaps? If bags, should I leave them open at the top? In either case, when wil it be safe to use on the garden please?

The quick and easy solution would be to mix it in with the compost heap. Otherwise, if you have the space, just leave it in a small pile on the ground and it will be ready for use when you dig the garden next winter.

Even simpler, just spread the manure over any vacant area. By the end of the winter it will have rotted down and be suitable for digging in or planting through. You might lose some of the nitrogen through leaching, but not enough to make any difference.

I'd be wary of putting fresh horse dung on any ground Bertie - safer to let rot down for a while first.

Not to mention the fact that any pets..might fancy a roll in it.....eeek!
I would rather mix it in to your normal compost heap and then it will be all ready mixed for next year....Great stuff!

Oh lord Alz... yes I can almost guarantee that daughter cat would do just that!

Never known any dog or cat to pass a manure heap without a god old roll and... rub.... but only once into the house of course....yuk!

Well, as I have a dog, I'd better not spread it on the veggie patch then! And that sounded like such a good idea!
If I put it in a heap I could use it specifically for the roses or the veggies but if I toss it in the compost I think it will be like a drop in the ocean. Maybe I could put in a heap and cover it with something? (I'm just off to get some more!)

OOOH..you lucky thing! Since the foot and mouth caper - it has been like gold dust...even in the countryside up here and we were not really badly affected at the time....but my supplier has just refused to give or sell it since.:>>(((
Drop in the ocean it may seem - but it would still enrich your compost heap!!

Well, I was blissfully unaware that there might be a problem now because of foot and mouth! Anyway I've picked up some more and am feeling quite pleased with myself! I'm sure you're right and it would enhance the compost heap, soI think I will put some in the bin after all, and heap the rest under a cover.
Thanks everyone, for the useful advice!

I,ve got a vacant bed i,m preparing for next year, I mixed some fresh horse manure with some well rotted manure and mixed it into the bed earlier in the summer. Hopefully by digging it through over the winter it will benifit the soil.

We are trying to get some horse manure, fresh or otherwise, for our new garden. If we manage to get any we will spread it because the garden is secure from pets.

I never had a problem with the dogs and horse manure as they were always too busy trying to eat the chicken pellets. Love using that stuff but could never ever stop the dogs digging around for it
