Geranium over wintering

Hi, I've got some geraniums. They still have flowers on, and in the G/H. some in pots and some dug up from the garden and just laying on the stageing with the root ball. My Q is what is the best way to keep them through the winter, and is it too late to take cuttings. Frank

Hi
I have kept some pelargoniums from autumn to spring wrapped in newspaper in the greenhouse and shed. Some may turn mouldy but you may be lucky with some. My mother-in-law used to keep hers under the bed!

Thanks for that both of you I'll have a go this winter of trying to save some. Frank

Another member told me recently to lift them, pull off all the leaves, cut all the stems back to about 4 inches and sink the rootballs into sandy/gritty compost and just keep them frost free but cool. I'm going to try that this year as I've had not luck at all with them otherwise.

I used to do what Sid describes and shove them on top of a wardrobe in an unheated bedroom, then repot them properly early March for putting back out later. Best if you get some green sulphur dust though, and puff that over them, helps to stop them getting mouldy.

No frank it isn't too late for cuttings, but get them as soon as you can. the main plants need to be potted on in fresh compost. check the roots for mealy bugs first .
