How can we get rid of old raspberry canes without killing off wild flowers in the same area? They are very difficult to get out by the roots.

Digging with a garden fork is the only way. The roots shouldn't be too deep.

when they go wild they will keep coming up for some time and all you can do is as Bulbaholic says fork them out but do not rip them out because if you leave any root in they will pop up some were else just have to look out for them and get as much root out as you can,

Stewart, welcome to GOY.
You will have to dig out each one or try pulling them out with a gloved hand. I have the same trouble also with brambles.
