Agree with previous answer. And if you're making a hedge, cut the plants back - by half if they're bare root, by two thirds if container grown; this is usually done immediately they[re planted, but given the time of year, best left till February, if mild, or March. Don't cut again until the following year, and reduce by the same amount again. After that, they should have thickened up to make a proper hedge and you can start clipping.

if they are in pots any time unless the soil is frozen. dont forget to prepare a good planting hole with plenty of compost dug in or fish blood and bone etc. if they are bare rooted as soon as you can, but if the ground is frozen heel them in some where sheltered until the conditions improve.
