well I have jacque but i waited a couple of years until the tree was settled. and i didnt go closer than 6" from the trunk.

what are you planning to plant?
i have snowdrops and anenome blanda followed by bulbous iris.

Why not, Jacque? Bulbs, especially the early flowering ones, will love to be beneath your rowan.

I've got Narcissus 'Tete a Tete' and cyclamen around the base of my ex-cherry tree :-) I'd agree with SBG and not go TOO close to the trunk, esp if it's a young one.
