sorry to be a pain as there are lots of different sorts .basicly you want 4" x4" treated posts as your uprights .i wouldnt but the posts in the soil as you can buy metal spikes you bang into the soil then bolt the uprights in at your chosen hight .you get a post spirit level which measusures 3 angles at once .you also get 2 pieces of batton to keep your first post at ninty degrees .i would advise you get some help to .you then measure out the size of your gazebo and square it of and mark every wear you want a post with a piece of wood and use a chippies right angle and some string to do this.put all your uprights up with the 2" notches facinig the same way bothe sides .you want about 4-6 feet between your uprights depending how big you want it.put your last post in after you have taken a notch out of the top for the cross members 2" wide bye 2"deep in the middle .you then get a 6" x2" treated and tap it into the gap youve cut in bothe sides of the uprights.then you get 4" x 2" cross members and cut an inch notch out to go cross ways on the 6" x 2" pieces .you can spread these out at about 6"-24" depending on what cocer you want.you will need some nails an outside glue a normal spirit level .im asuming your going to grow climbers over the top.the other thing is you leave about a 12" hang over on the lst 2" x 4" cross members for a better look . personaly i would if your good with your hands got to a garden centre and take a few pictures and look on the internet at the to give you an idea.if your not good with your hands i would pay someone else to build you one or get a push together ready made one.id stain the treated wood if you want to before you put it together . i think if your not handy you would need help with this .if you build your own your going to have to work out what you want size wise and then work out how much and what lengths of timber you will nead as its quite expensive and you dont want lots left over and an empty purse.i think you should look for someone who knows what there doing to help you .its easy writing this down but i know what im doing.i hope this has helped take care bye for now and happy new year .xx

A gazebo/shade means different things to different people

Google "gazebo plans" and take your pick. You might have to translate it into metric. I've seen advertisements from Maxmat that has stores in the continent that might be able to help. Definitely go with something that looks regional. Bom passagem do Ano Novo.

why have something regional surley your garden is possibly the only place youve got that you can make look how you want it surley ?

31 Dec, 2009

I agree Noseypotter if you want a gazebo in the shape of a space ship it is your choice - bit odd but it is your garden and your choice. What would a 'regional' gazebo look like in N Scotland I wonder? We don't have one by the way lol

I have seen some wonderful ones in friends gardens all looked different and all fitted perfectly with their garden.

Even on allotments sheds tend to reflect their owners and are not all the same unless supplied by the council

would yours be made from cabers or girders mg? :o))

31 Dec, 2009

Wouldn't have one SBG - doesn't fit with the garden - but if I did it wouldn't be made of cabers or girders... probably willow.

I know what you mean MG, there wouldnt be a place for one in mine either. And subtle willow would be such a nice choice. I have never liked the 'heavy' ones. but i suppose if they have to support lots of foliage they will have to be strong. how are the coughs by the way?

31 Dec, 2009

SBG the coughs are very, very slowly improving... Not enough that I am fit to do anything physical though. Mind you the weather doesn't help we've already had two weeks of snow and it is set to continue..

~ hope your snow disappears soon~along with your coughs!
~best wishes for a happy healthy New Year!

I did not wish to take part in this discusion, but do you think that you are being fair, you seemed to treat a frend from Portugal's well ment coment's with distane and ridecule, a space ship might sute you but but in Portugal they are a more seariously minded people, and that sort of nonsence would be fround up on,

i dont think mg was suggesting it cliffo, just that what suits one person may not be what another would like or chose to have.

perhaps she is not awaer of the consetative nature of the people of portugal, some one who lives there is in fact able to give a better answer,to a questioner from that country, which was the case if I am not merstaken,I am shore that I would expect MG to know better than some one from Portugal the way scots people think,

Cliffo Wylieintheazores lives in the Azores not Portugal. I was not and am not proposing that anyone should create a gazebo that looks like a space ship - though I have seen some very odd looking willow gazebos. Unless there is an actual law that insists that Tarahall builds his/her gazebo to a certain style then I see no reason why the questioner should not just get on an build what they want, which is what NP said too. I am not aware of a Scottish 'style' of gazebo - I repeat we have many friends with such and they are all different, celebrating the differences in their gardens.

as I understand it MG a front garden is involved, and what you do there could affect the saleability of the house, when the time came, for instance ,would you build a follie in your front garden, the back garden I would agree with you, and I am still convinced that Wylie lives or has lived in Portugal,

the question arose because Tara had been looking at the front gardens idea section on this site. She doesnt say where it is for.

i think the fact i have a wall of different size circles made out of old wire and concrete sais it all but its not worth any bad fealings and i kind of think you both have a point but mostly i like you all a lot .i just didnt think the resale of the house was mentioned .im sure my 2000 gallon pond and my concrete fence and even my sculptures wouldnt be most peoples cup of tea . again i agree as for resale i think you need as clean a canvas as possible realy .just remember its spring soon and its going to be the gardeners year . i can feal it in my bones lol happy new year and take care xx.
