Aucuba japonica (Japanese laurel), spotted or the green variety - do they sucker like some shrubs can?
I know that it's best to keep them compact by using secateurs rather than shears.

Thanks all - I have one planted in a corner to fill a gap between the fence and the hedge and I will eventually have to prune to keep in the space I want it - I didn't want it sprouting everywhere!
