Hi all, I wonder if anybody has any bright ideas for a feature shrub/very small tree for a small, dry, north facing front garden, pH5.5, border size 5m x 4m i? I have been researching for days and days (it is a piece of coursework that i'm doing) and I can't settle on anything, or really find anything that would appreciate those conditions.
Thanks in advance - I know from asking questions before that you guys are the best!

what about some of the slower growing conifers. I like Pinus mungo, something going on all year with it.

I've had it for 16 years and recently had to dig it out but I am replacing it.

I have a cotinus [Grace] as a feature shrub, not evergreen but so lovely in Autumn as the leaves go red. Purplish leaves in other seasons.

japanese maple for me. I know they don't like the dry but if you water until established, it should be fine.

How about a standard trained camellia. Choose a williamsii one eg Donation.

Amelanchier - 'Ballerina' or 'Obelisk' would be the smallest.

Thanks everyone - I shall have a look at all those suggestions :)

Amelanchier are lovely. So is the Judas tree (mine is in a spot like yours) Cercis siliquastris I think!

Mahonias are possibly a bit big, but they are evergreen, have delightful, scented winter blossom and do very well in total shade.

How do I say thanks?
