when would be the best time to sow tomatoes indoors to get an early start?

March/April is early enough...when light levels have improved....

Certainly not before late March...

I reckon on sowing mine during the second half of March at the earliest. Even a sowing in the first week of April had caught up by the end of May

That's how mine start John. They only go into a cold greenhouse when they have been potted up and starting to grow a bit

Thanks Andrew I ll give it a go any suggestions of what varieties to sow?

I've grown the same one for over 25 years - Gemini. It's an upright variety for outdoors or a cold greenhouse with medium-sized, sweet fruit. Only Dobies stock it but it wasn't in their catalogue this year :-(
