Is it too late to prune an april flowering clematis? advice would be appreciated. Thanks

If this is an alpina or a macropetala, please don't prune it at all! All you will do is cut off the flower bearing buds. That also applies to the evergreen sorts. No pruning is required! Montanas can be tidied up - after the plant has flowered.

If you'd like to read a blog on pruning clematis that I wrote, click on the letter 'C' at the bottom of the page, then click on 'Clematis plants' and you'll find it. I hope it helps.

Yes!....because it flowers on old wood, if you prune it now you will have no flowers in April. Always best to prune early clematis if you have to after flowering, then it can make all the growth in summer that will flower the following year.
