i have just cut back two mature ceanothus bushes that have died, it looks as though the roots go down into the soil quite deeply, and added to that they are very close to fencing, makes digging the roots out a very difficult job, can anyone suggest using chemicals to kill the roots and will this harm any plants in close proximity?

If the shrubs are dead, then the roots are also dead and so you do not really need to remove them. However if you feel you need to, then there is a chemical which can be soaked into the end of the roots which is supposed to rot them away. Never used it so no idea of its efficacy.
