'It' rather than 'them', Pdb. It will be one plant with lots of underground runners - long, white roots. Get as much root out as possible because each little bit will grow again.

Many thanks. I tried to send a photo of them last week and couldn't so thought they were wild strawberries! Since then it has almost doubled in size. I've dug the runners up but didn't realise it would be one plant. Never had it before .

You'll have to keep on top of digging it out or paint the growth as it appears with roundup or something similar.

I've put an answer about the ground elder on your honesty question.

Oooo! My Ground Elder is spreading again, going to give it a good spray of weed killer when the wind die's down, will have to put some polythene round any close plants first, after I've sprayed I was wondering if to cover with black polythene, what do you think? Jackie x

Looks a bit like Ground Elder to me, it is a rampant weed but you can eat the young leaves, I have been trying to get rid of mine for years.
