when should I cut back my stipa tenuissima?

On plant Stipa tenuissima

Don't cut it back, in spring just run your fingers through the leaves as if your combing it,lol, this will remove any dead growth.

I made the mistake of "combing" mine while wearing gloves and little bits of it stuck. I ended up with as much stuck to my gloves as what I threw away. If you have a pronged hand spade, that will work very well. I do mine after it has flowered and had a chance to dry in late spring.

Thanks for your advice.

try wearing rubber gloves that you'd do the washing up with. then bits will not stick to them.

I grew mine from seed (really stupid as I had to wait about three years before I got really good clumps).
This is a fabulous grass and as is said above, you don't need to do anything to it as it will just grow back each year.
If you have the space, divide it every year or so and plant the new clumps somewhere else.
This plant completely changed my view that grasses were 'boring'. Makes a great backdrop to so many flowers, and lasts all winter long.

Carex comns is another grass you might want to try. It is really a sedge and makes a focal point because it is an orangey-brown, and everyone thinks you have something dead. Both are amazingly cat-proof. My guys enjoy playing in them and do no damage.
