Is this a weed? I can't remember planting anything like it in the bed it's in.
I'd be grateful if anyone can tell me, please.

I thought it looked like one of the 'Mints' Spritz, or even a type of Nepeta?

My first thought was Nepeta but then what do I know, I've been nurturing a weed thinking it was Doronicum ;)

No, not aromatic, and I don't think it's a Mint or a Nepeta although I see what you mean. I have a horrible suspicion it's a nasty...
Please do 'dig', Sbg! I used to have a weed identifier as a favourite - I should look for that again because it's not on my list!

It reminds me of a little Lamium that used to grow as a weed in my garden. It has tiny mauve/pink flowers, and isn't very invasive.
I'll try and find it's name in my wild flower books ..... if it is the same one, but it does look similar.

SOMETHING at least likes the taste of it, judging by the munched bits! Perhaps you can use it as 'companion planting'!
(PS Spritzh if you do find your weed identifier, let us know the site, please!)

It could be Glechoma hederacea - Ground Ivy.... it reminds me very much of it. That's the one I had in my garden. Don't know if I'm right though.

Might be useful.
Ground ivy has a definite aroma, to me very unpleasant it is too.

Does it ? I've never been able to smell it myself.

The leaf reminds me of a Teucrium scorodonia 'wood sage'. It also looks a bit like one of the figworts. But not convinced. I find ground ivy really smelly too. personally I'd pull it and pop it into a pot to see what it grows into. Then if it is a thug then no harm done. There is no telling what other seeds have been washed into the garden.

I'm afraid my weed ID site is no longer available. I looked at the one Owdboggy suggested, but 'my' weed isn't there. It's not Glechoma, Hywel - I have that elsewhere and the leaves are much larger on this plant.

Oh, sorry I can't help then ... it just reminded me of it.
If you let it flower then it may be easier to identify .... but watch the seeds ...

It isn't that Teucrium either, Sbg... Dd kindly sent me a plant a few years ago now, so I can compare them. It's a real puzzle, but I suspect I might end up potting it up and seeing what happens. I'm very supicious of it in case it spreads!
Hywel - I'm not waiting until it flowers!!!

the leaves look slightly furry are they? what about a figwort then?
13 May, 2013
What's that? I shall have to look it up...

the genus is Scrophularia Spritz. I just wonder if its a rogue seed from the flooding. they grow in the same conditions as dreaded balsam.
15 May, 2013
The plant is in my top border, so it wasn't flooded. I'm very puzzled by it. I haven't seen a weed like it before, so I'm wondering if it's worth keeping.

get it lifted and planted just in case :o) could be seed dropped by birds!

A friend took a look yesterday and pinched the leaves - it smells a bit 'minty'.

Had a look at my Nepeta Barbara and it's virtually identical to your plant. Mines 6 hills Giant, could yours be a smaller variety?
17 May, 2013
I'm hoping it might be a Nepeta - but it seems to be growing through a Dianthus! Isn't that weird.

Previous question
are the leaves aromatic?
It reminds me of one of the brassica type wild flowers. I need to do a bit of 'digging' in my books.
