Sorry Daylily we need a better photo to id. Can you perhaps describe the bird, colour, shape of beak etc.

From the little I can make out, I'd take a stab at a green woodpecker, by the look of its beak

Thanks both sorry I havent got anymore photos I know its not very good just grabbed my camera this morning and zoomed in. He looks like he has a dark bit on his tail (or her) and was fairly large size but thats all i got. I will have a look at the green woodpecker. Thanks again :)

Or you could ask on ispyabird which is the sister site about birds to this one.

Didn't think it was big enough for a woodpecker Bamboo but the pic are so out of focus it is difficult to tell.

I enlarged the picture a little by putting into a 'word' document and would suggest a finch, probably a greenfinch.

Greenfinch was my first thought bulby

Greenfinch. The yellow wing edges will give it away. The beak is stumpy - a seed eater's beak.

Hi all thanks, but it looks a lot bigger than a greenfinch to me and I didnt think they had a cream breast. when I zoomed in a bit more it did look like it had a longer beak, I can see the reason for thinking its the woodpecker more so. thank you again for your comments :)

Well I've had another look, this time with the right glasses and on the desktop computer, and its most definitely not a woodpecker. I still can't see it at all clearly, but it does appear to have a heavy bill like finch. Could be a summer visitor like one of the warblers, doesn't seem quite the right colouration for greenfinch, but it's hard to be sure.

It could be a juvenile Greenfinch, they have a pale breast according to my bird book.

I forgot to say I can't believe that what I can see with the right glasses on, and on the pc (and not my 7 inch Nexus tablet) is so much clearer. I wish I'd bought a larger tablet, my eyes just aren't up to the job...

Hi bamboo and nanjo thanks. I would say it was at least 7-10 inches long with its tail it wasnt a small bird i think my neighbours at the back of us birdwatch so i will show them too but again i agree its not a good picture :)

looking at the fence post the bird is perched on I would question it being 7 - 10 inches long and having looked at the image another GoYer uploaded for you I would say immature green finch.

This is what a green woodpecker looks like

holds itself in a different way

He/she put up as a new question with a photo attached...

A fence board like the ones shown is, typically, four inches to six inches broad.

Hi again, GOY member Taz has suggested its a goldfinch and on the modified picture it does look as if it has gold and black on his wings so it does look like it is one :)

Definitely not 7 - 10 inches then, which would be large even for a woodpecker

Goldfinch, lovely, had one on the balcony 2 days ago - but they do have a very bright red area on the face, both sides, and I can't see that in the pic, although that doesn't mean it's not there.

Hi bamboo and moongrower yes i thought he looked like he had a dark eye and did think it was bigger than that but does look similar but as you say does have some distinct markings that we cant see on my pic :)

goldfinches don't have red faces when young, but do have dark eye and a buff coloured chest, we have lots in our garden , and looking at the photo i'm sure that's what it is

How do I say thanks?
