Hi. I am concerned re the small grub I get in my peas when shelling them. I have had this problem for the last two or three years. At what stage does it get in and what can I do to prevent this. The peas look perfectly OK on the outside.

Pea moth. Little caterpillars in the peas from eggs laid when peas are in flower, and the caterpillar hatches out inside the pod to feed on the growing pea. If I remember rightly it makes the pea taste grim. Early or late sown peas avoid the moth's main flying months, and escape the moth's attentions

I remember them well - pesky little things.

The trick is - not to throw them into your mouth as you are shelling them, then realise you've just swallowed one of them!
