I understand that wind can do this damage, I have an Acer in a windy position, and the edges of some of the leaves are brown.

Wind and hot sun both cause this, together and separately. The leaves are delicate and don't take kindly to very hot sun between the hours of 11 and 3, and wind batters them too.

Looks just like mine! They hate the full sun, hate the wind and are temperamental little beasts.
Even one of the Acer centres I went to had the same problem, so I shouldn't worry about it too much, just looks unsightly.
Mine is going in the part shade, sheltered from the wind bit next. Apparently the dark ones are more prone to it.

Yup wind and sun and, possibly, lack of water.

I would move it into a more sheltered place as soon as its safe to do so. I lost mine through putting it in a sunny windy place because i didn't know any better!

Mine is a relatively small one I bought earlier in the year, It is in a pot ,and I stood it in the shadiest border, and kept well watered..it still shrivelled at the edges, because of the sheer heat we have had..but I saw a new undamaged leaf to day..

Find a cool, shady place for it. A bit of sun is ok, but full sun is not.
Wind can be a problem so shelter is needed.
Somewhere in the garden these requirements can usually be found.
Good luck and persevere; The result (a healthy Acer) will be worth it.

Am thinking about rigging up shading over my Container plants for next year, as all the GCs have shaded roofs fitted. Just dont have enough shade space.
