Has anyone successfully grown a wildflower meadow using RHS Mini Meadow seed mix? I've never had much luck sowing directly in the ground before (this goes for anything I've ever planted!). I'm preparing the ground now, have dug it over and it's covered with an old plastic tablecloth to discourage any weeds or roots I might have missed initially. I plan to leave it covered til September/October when the packet suggests I sow the wildflower mix.

I just wondered if anyone had any tips for me? :-)

I haven't any tips, but good luck and I hope that next year you'll be showing us photos of your wonderful meadow!

Never in UK, but in the East. One year we plowed a field and planted the wild flower seeds after we somewhat worked the soil flat. We did not do any fertilizing, they don't like that. However, we watered and watered so much that we vowed we would never do it again. The results were wonderful the first year. It was a beautiful site. The next year we waited, but very few came back. Now, we live in Vermont and have fields and roads of wild flowers, so many different ones. They really like to be Wild, and the seeds, and I have tried different ones, do not do the job. Come to Vermont in late July, early August. The state does not cut the roadsides until the flowers are over. whoops, have to go chase a deer away from the apple tree. I don't mean to sound discouraging, but it does seem difficult to do it. The birds of course eat the seeds you plant and they just don't seem to surface. When you think how many seeds the flowers put out in the wild, maybe that is part of the problem. not enough.
