When I am about to cut my grass, it looks lovely and green. However, afterwards, I become aware of "dead" patches. It looks like an underlayer of dead grass trailing below the healthier grass. What do you think this is and what can I do about it?

Thanks. That's what I thought but wanted to avoid the hard work if I could!

I borrowed an electric one from a friend a few years ago and it was amazing. Loads of rubbish came up. I have never done it in our present garden as the lawn is postage stamp sized.

It probably needs a good scarify using your lawn rake or a machine. It will be a bit bald afterwards but you can always feed it and it'll soon bounce back.
