I have never been able to keep lupins, so this year I have planted seed, and now have about 24 good plants. In order to keep them inside during the winter, I need to put them singly into deep pots, but with a top diameter of no more than 4" (because of space). Are there any plastic pots I can buy please?

Any B & Q or Homebase should sell them.

Hi, and welcome to g o y, why do you want to keep them inside over winter?, they're hardy plants, I have grown some myself from seed this year, and I will be planting them out in the next couple of weeks, Derek.

I would question the need to keep them inside, like Derek says, they are hardy plants and should be outside really.

Check your nursery/garden centre for pots. Lots of time (round here) they are only too glad to get rid of some and give them away. Don't forget to wash them though.

I wish you could come and help me empty my cellar Margaret - I must have had about 300 various pots, but am embarking on a rigorous almost-post-summer cleaning session. I think it will mean about 4 trips to the recycling bin for the pots alone, much less all the rest of the cr..... Sorry, RUBBISH we've got lurking down there. Washing and reusing them in our own garden is never going to happen one we've got past maybe the first 50.
If you're worried about your lupins being outside overwinter, you could always make mini-cloches out of the cut-off bottoms of plastic lemonade bottles to protect them, but you are more likely to subject them to mould with the condensation that collects inside. I'm with Louisa and Derek on this one - leave them where they are and hope for the best.

I grew lupins from my own seed. I planted the seeds last Autumn and they came up before the winter. We had the worst winter here that anyone can remember. The lupins survived in their pots unprotected and are now growing beautifully in the garden.

That sounds promising, Canalhopper.
