Hi Basia, as Lancashire is not in Scotland (at least, not the last time I looked) I am not sure just where your garden is.
Tree ferns grow well on the west coast of Scotland, eg at Inverewe Gardens, due to the Gulf Stream. The rest of us have to give them some protection in winter in the form of frost fleece etc.

I live in Glasgow and we need to protect them.

Do you mean a Scottish themed garden?
