What shrub or small tree will grow in a large pot in mostly shade (north facing) to about 15-20 feet high?

You'd be very lucky to attain that height with anything contained in a tub, no matter how big it is - the root restriction will prevent full height from being attained. I was going to suggest Fatsia japonica, which will get to probably 4, maybe 5 feet in a tub. Your only other alternative is to buy something as a standard, so that the growth is all at the top, when you might reach 6 feet with it.

Not a chance!...unless your container is the size of a small swimming pool.

Still won't get that tall, Helen - I've grown it in a large tub (Fargesia) and it only reached five feet high..
