It looks like a Goldfinch

I thought that and looked at lots of pictures of Finches but none looked like the one in my picture?

I'd also say it was a goldfinch the only problem being all my books show a bright red face.

It could be the sunlight diluting the colour.

One book i have says that juvenile birds have brown masks so perhaps that's the answer.

I have found out the name of the bird it is a Finch as you all thought but it's a "Hawfinch"
Thanks for all your help xx Jackie xx

I have just looked in my Collins book on birds, and it still looks to me more like a goldfinch than a hawfinch, but that just my thoughts.

definitely a juvenile goldfinch. it will be a second brood juvenile. Hawfinches don't have yellow feathers no black feathers around the back of the neck. The beak is also slightly hooked in a hawfinch.

It's definitely a goldfinch I think the photo has lightened the face slightly, but they are a lot brighter in breeding plumage.

Deffo not a hawfinch - they have black bibs for one thing and no yellow patch for another. They don't have white breasts.

Looks more like my next-door neighbour, has she moved? Oh! I hope so.

Hope she doesn't read Goy Myron!

Agree NOT a hawfinch!

OK! A Goldfinch it is LOL.
One more question, why has the one I took got an orange colour head?
Thanks for every ones help in ID-ing it for me.

As has already been said this is a juvenile, the colouring will get brighter as the bird becomes an adult.

They have a lovely red bandanna over their eyes when adult, the babies don't. They seem to have done well this year and flocks of them were in the crab apple chattering away, very noticable, sort of chattering swooping flight......I love having them around.

You may have spotted something. It looks like a ringed bird.
Lady E, keep an eye out for that one, see if that is a ring on its right leg. If so, it's possibly been ringed locally and will be on a register somewhere.

I just read that a flock of goldfinches is in fact a "charm of goldfinches" isn't that lovely and so apt.

20 Oct, 2013

You're right! It does look like a ring on it's right leg. I copied the picture into Paint shop Pro to see if I could enhance the picture. The resolution isn't to high, so I'm still not sure.
