Hi, we have a red cordyline which is about 12ft high. It has sufferred strong winds and looks very sorry for itself. The stem is oozing a white puss like substance which stinks. Should it be destroyed.

Well you're not alone, I've lost count of the number of people with ex Cordylines after this last winter... the garden centres must be rubbing their hands together with glee...

Sounds like some kind of bacterial infection - you can either remove it now or cut it down past the oozing part and see if it regrows.
