is it possible to put grass seed on a dead lawn i bought turf last year and it has died and dried up what is the best way to repair the turf

If its all dead, you will have to remove it and returf. If just in patches, you will need to scrape up the soil in the patches to give a friable tilth about an inch deep minimum, into which you can sow grass seed.
