I have a large garden are there any ideas to make it less work as both me and my hubby are pensioners now and each year the work gets harder and we want to enjoy it for a change instead of constantly working in it

I think cutting down on the lawn areas takes a lot of the hard work out of gardening. Replacing with evergreen ground cover such as Junipers and taller shrubs such as Vibernum Tinus with plenty of bark to cut down the weeding.

Low maintenance is quite a huge subject. The most obvious thing is to gravel any lawns. Not a popular thing to do amongst gardeners but needs must. Concentrate on perennial shrubs not on annuals that have to be planted every year. Use ground covering plants to keep the weeds down as a living mulch. I am sure others will add to this but I hope it gives you a start.
