Use a bottle or jar, glass if possible so it is heavy enough and if it is see through the children can see the roots develop. Almost fill it with water and sit your stone on top, just touching the water. If you do not have a container with a narrow neck (to stop the stone falling in to the water) stick common pins or cocktail sticks into the stone to balance it on the top of your container. Keep it in a warm kitchen and wait, sometimes quite a long time for roots and shoots to appear. My children loved doing this.

Thanks for your suggestion Scotsgran. I see what you mean, I thought about this and what I just did was to cut the top off a clear plastic bottle, turn it upside down and rest it in the bottom part of the bottle. The stone sits in there a treat and holds the water fine. I will take a picture of it tomorrow to show you what I did.
Thanks for your help with this,
Richard

I eat alot of these, they always, well a lot of the time, take root in the compost bin, must have something to do with how warm it is in there

Hope you plant them up Great. They have lovely leaves but I have never seen them flower or fruit.

I was reading about the avocados Scotsgran and eventually they grow into a tree and then they fruit. I think I will keep mine in a pot Great, and trim it down every now and then.
