Begonia help wanted PLEASE - I got a nice surprise last weekend on checking my bedding begonia corms - which had been stored in a box of dry sawdust in the spare room for the winter. I found they were very health & had nice young shoots starting. I planted them up into trays of compost last weekend with only the bottoms sitting on damp compost - I haven't burried them at all or put compost around the sides or tops - is this correct ? Can someone please adivse how I get them growing & how to care for them - The bottoms are now starting to soften - is this normal as they start to absorb the moisture & take root ? Do I just spray around them with a fine mist to keep them moist (& not get water on the tops) ? I have them in the polytunnel rather than the greenhouse at the moment but as there is a lot of condensation in the tunnel there are quite a few water droplets falling onto them - would they be better in the greenhouse ?

This is the first time I have tried the 'sitting on compost' technique and I'm pleased to say I have quite a lot of growth showing at present. I have them in individual pots inside a trough which I occasionally put approx. an 1/8" of water in so they can absorb moisture from the bottom.
I am so looking forward to their flowering as I just love the continuous flowering with so little attention and (touch wood) trouble from pests or disease all the way through until frost at the end of the season....

Thanks Sanbaz / Bogoniafan. I've a long way to go before I get any leaves but don't intend putting them into flowerbeds until beginning of June so hopefully if they can get gowing they will grow quickly. Will move into greenhouse and push into compost a little further. We need some sunshine in Scotland to help. :o)

Unfortunately yes Sanbaz - we sit in a valley, so it often skips us, but the Moffat hills are covered in snow. Last week was a horendous week - a right mixture - frost, gailforce winds with heavy rain & sleet & snow - very, very cold. Think cold spell's to last well into next week as well but I'm taking the opportunity this weekend to plant up as many seeds & pot on wintered plants as much as possible regardless - might as well make use of the extra holiday days off work. :o)

sounds like you have had it rough TCG, so glad we havent had sleet or snow here, so sunny today so it may help my pond hole dry out a little, thats another story lol, hoping its going to be sunny tomoz to so we can start putting surrounding pond right,i hate it when things go wrong hahah, of well we live and learn :o))

All begonias now moved into greenhouse Sanbaz - can you tell me how much you watered round them when they were corms - did you keep the compost only slightly damp or do they like their bottoms to be quite wettish. Will they eventually produce roots? They're holding their own (apart from the ones I lost in the polytunnel that had started to look a bit suspect for mold) which I removed - guess was no much condensation in there for them. There are only a few more shoots over the last week since moving to greenhouse but I'm not too sure if I need to water then more, or water them less? Can you help please?

just kept them slightly damp to touch and found that was enough TCG, and yes will produce roots, mine doing ok in growhouse now to, just keep them watered a bit more as they grow ;o)
