we have a large phormium that has suffered this last winter,its straps have crackedhalf way along,please advise,should i cut them off at half way or to the main plant,gillian.

You're welcome :-) Just to be clear, I don't think you should remove ALL the leaves right down to the base - just the worst damaged/unslightly ones.

Previous question
If you're planning on cutting back the damaged leaves, then I'd cut them right back to the base, as it'll look odd otherwise. Just don't remove too many!
