splitting phormiums

i would like to split a phormium, currently in a pot it is pot bound now. i would like to split it into two and plant it in the ground. can i put a spade through it or can anyone suggest a better way? thanks

Yep, I agree with Ducky, if you have one of those retractable branch saws, they are the best for chopping through congested tough root balls. Give it a good feed and some nice fresh organic matter for a treat it will be in shock for a while.

Yes you can hack it in half - I needed a saw when I last split one as the base was so tough and I couldnt get a spade through it.
