Corderlynes often lose their bottom leaves, It is quite normal. Just pull them downwards to remove them. If you want it to get really tall, plant it in the ground. my dads did this about 10 years ago and his has grown to about 20 feet tall.

A note of caution about removing the lower leaves. If they are totally dry and come away easy then just pull them off. If they do not come away easiy then cut them a couple of inches from where they join the stem. They do have quite a few dead lower fronds as they grow older but if there are a lot then it might be that it needs potting on. As BB says lift it out of the pot and check. when they get to a certain size the best thing to do is plant them in the ground.

Possibly, but if your plant was out all winter, it might just be the winter that's killed of more leaves than usual. Turn the plant out of its pot and check the roots to see if they're cramped. Pot on if necessary, otherwise just remove the dead leaves.
