chitting potatoes I have just got several variaties of spuds from our allotment secretary and wondered is it necessary to chit them as I do not have the space and what is the best way to store them.

Hi Steve, you do not need to chit first early tattoos best to chit the rest so they get a good start.

You do not want them sprouting long straggly stems so do not keep them anywhere much above a frost free area. Do you have a shed or a garage with a window. That would be ideal. Try to lay them out in a single layer if possible. As Mg says it is not necessary to chit first earlies. You might be able to get family or friends to foster them in return for a boiling. i have just noticed you have a greenhouse. Put the potatoes in orange boxes or something on the floor. Cover them up if frost is expected.

I buy mine from our allotment shop and I either put them on egg trays or plastic baskets and put them in the spare bedroom, you could put them under a bed if you have the space but keep an eye on them.
