I have bought a climbing hydrangea will it tolerate shade and can it be grown in a large pot

It won't get as big as it should in a pot, no matter how large, but yes, you can, and as for shade, it's very good at growing in shade.

I agree with Bamboo, I've got one in partial shade and its ok. Its 5 yr old in a large 75ltr pot and has only grown to around 4ft in height and spread. They are slow growing anyway but put in the ground they will grow as high as the wall will allow, given years. It will need regular feeding during growing season. Although the flowers are small and plentyful if grown directly in the ground, you don't get the same efffect in a tub or pot.
