I bought 2 lupins and one has a very small flower spike. It is being eaten from the bottom up. what could be causing this? It isn't slugs as there are no tell tale trails. Any ideas?

Could be slugs.......but I recon it might be that the plant was a bit too dry in the pot and the plant has simply 'aborted' the buds. They are heavy feeders too. When you plant out make sure you water in well and maybe provide some feed of some sort - such as bone meal or chicken manure pellets.

I have watered it well Sid, but not fed it, thought being a new border it would be ok with added compost!.It was growing so well to, the leaves are lovely.

Ah, I thought the plant was still in a pot when the problem came up.....I think you're right that the plant should be ok in the new border with added compost. So, either it just needs time to settle in and establish, or maybe it's the slugs....you could use a beer trap near the plant to catch any slugs present. Hope this helps a bit?!
