It's not 100% reliable, but the stump may also send out several new rosettes, especially if lightly fed.

Yes, you can also use the top rosette as a cutting. It is just the right time to do this now. Cut the stem from 3-12 inches below the rosette( your choice). Leave the cuttings exposed to the air to callous over, then set them 2 or 3 inches deep in gritty compost. Keep them just moist, don't overwater or they may rot. They should be rooted in 1 or 2 weeks and will be good plants in a few months.
