I have a 25year old Acer which has died on one side. Can anyone tell me why? This has never happened before

could be wind scorch - maybe something has been moved/cut down and allowed prevailing wind at it.
or coral spot - look for masses of tiny pink pustules.
honey fungus - if roots/base decayed, look for toadstools nearby and bootlace-like strands under the bark at base.
Or could be drought - is anything else that's greedy (bamboo/large shrubs/trees) next to it?
