I want to take out an old holly tree and replace it with a red lilac. Which would be next to a white lilac.
Would this be possible?

Seems a shame, but they are diffferent families so yes you could do this. You might need to give the soil a good feed with compost before planting if the Holly has been in for a long time.

And wear good thick gauntlets when you remove...

Thanks for your advice. Now if I cut the Holly Tree, is there anyway I can stop the stump from growing again. I have heard if I paint cooking oil over the stump, this would stop any further growth. Do you agree?
