V. opulus is the geilder rose [native one] and the one I had berried so it must be as I wasn't aware of any near by.

Depends on the variety really and if you want the berries in the autumn.
The one I used to have I used to cut back in the autumn/early spring vry hard and then leave it for several years until it got too big then I did the same again.
if you know which one you have then someone will give you the correct pruning regime.
