Buddleia. I have several buddleia shrubs come into flower recently but so far have seen No butterflies on it! I thought it was called 'butterfly bush' as it attracts so many insects but mainly butterflies? Getting a bit worried or am I just being impatient?

I never seem to get as many as I expected on mine,Amsterdam, but I get lots on the small Alliums, which I can see at closer quarters..

I find they do attract more in august etc I suspect they are the first of this new seasons adults. September tends to be best month as there are fewer nectar rich flowers at this time of year.

mine are just putting out flower buds though.

Bloomer- my alliums attract a lot of bumble bees. So many in fact that they can not support the weight several bumble bees feeding on one allium at the same time and often topple over!

Some of the common species (peacocks and red admirals) won't emerge until early August. I have seen small tortoiseshells and commas so far. Painted Ladies vary in how far north they migrate and don't arrive quite yet in most of the country. So you will miss them ifyour flowers are over in August.
This raises an important point. You must keep your Buddleja in flower as late as possible for the butterflies. The yellow weyerianas keep flowering and Autumn Beauty (Beijing) is a late flowerer. Later pruning in April or even May will mean later flowers in B. davidii. But the surest way is to have your plants small enough to be able to keep deadheading them, then they will produce a second and third flush of flowers into September. When seed is setting flowering turns off.
The newer super-dwarf hybrids don't seem to be favoured by the butterflies, but smaller cultivars (like Buzz and the butterfly Series) are still good.

Buddlejagar. Thanks for that information. Will bear in mind to keep them flowering as late as possible. I do deadhead to keep them going. I have planted a bee and butterfly friendly wildlife corner with various plants and shelters in the hope that I will see more in August!
