Some of the varieties with the best scent have only short stems, and some of the varieties with bigger flowers and long stems have only little scent...

Just caught your question, Driad.....I know with mine to produce long stems with good flowers, I cut off all the tendrils even as they are just sprouting, then tie the stems in, the growth then goes into the flowers and stems.
