My potato plants have developed "cherry tomatoes" at the top. The leaves of the plant are still potato leaves not tomato leaves. Are these 'fruits' edible?

NO they are poisonous so on no circumstances eat them.
the tomato and potato are closely related to each other, hence the similar flower shape and as you have noticed similar fruits.

Maybe it's a myth but supposedly if potatoes were discovered today (instead of 500 years ago) they wouldn't pass the American Food & Drugs regulations.
Just imagine all those burgers and no fries!

potatoes and tomatoes are part of the same family, solarnum, hence if your potatoes flower they will produce fruits that look like tomatoes. But, as has already been said the potato fruits are toxic.

Did you know that there is now a Tomtato, the tomato plant is grafted onto the potato plant & you can get the potatos & tomatoes from the same plant. Available for the first time this year from Suttons.

T & M has too, given that one plant is £14.99 I think I'll stick to growing them separately :)

No they are poisonous they are seed head/ball that can be got rid of when the plants have finished.
