I am to be extending my patio which means digging up a large healthy established fern. Can I put this fern into a large container and will it survive?

It may survive, it may not… a well established fern is not going to thank you for digging it up and you may find it needs a larger container than you think. As NP says this is not a good time of year to be moving it, late autumn when the foliage has died down would be much better.
