Hi folks, I have recently planted a David Austin Boscobel rose. Can any of you tell why I have tight little buds?

Hi, has it bloomed fully yet? Could be new buds coming through to open in the next few weeks or old buds that missed the conditions to open. Given that this rose is new this year, contact Austin's and ask them for advice.

Urbanite, it hasn't bloomed yet it's only been in the ground for about 4 weeks. It's a brand new rose recently bought. I was expecting blooms to look like the pictures on the label.

That's not a bloom, it's partly opened bud. If they're not opening and staying like this on the bush, give it a good soaking - as you only planted it 4 weeks ago, its possible its short of water, and the flowers will be the first thing that the plant sacrifices. If you think its the wrong variety that they've supplied, you won't/can't be certain of that until and unless the flowers open fully.

I'm an idiot Bamboo, bud is what I meant. But don't buds turn into blooms?

Yep - but I looked at pics of Boscobel and for all I know, the outer petals have a touch of yellow before they open - all I can find are pictures of fully open blooms.

Taken from DA Site......

‘Boscobel’ bears beautifully formed flowers of rich salmon colouring. They commence as red buds which open at first to pretty cups, gradually developing into perfectly formed blooms of classic rosette formation. The numerous small petals are of varying shades, mingling to provide a most pleasing effect.

If you look at the image on DA site, the colour of your buds are not that different. I also found this and they look similar too.

Thanks folks, I was only a little worried because the bud seemed a little tight and looked like it was struggling.

Boscobel is a stunner Treetop. I saw it at Chelsea and really loved it. I hope it turns out to be wonderful for you. :)

The two I have, seem to be showing signs of picking up now. Most of my garden sees sunshine throughout the day. So I am a little bit more optimistic than I was last week.

Yeah, it was probably symptomatic of planting a container rose so late in the season. I planted a Fighting Temeraire a few months back, and it's taken ages to get a bit established. The flowers weren't good to begin with, but it's picked up now it's stopped flowering.
