Thanks Bamboo, I just looked them up and it says they are biennial. How do they grow to be 10 foot tall then?

they just do - where the climate's right, which it isn't throughout most of the UK. They start from seed one year, form a good solid base and then shoot up and flower the following year. They grow well in the Channel Islands (Jersey) and down in the west near the coast in a good year.
