Hi, i am trying to find out the name of this shrub but have had no luck. once i know what it is i can then prune it correctly and at the correct time of year. any help would be very much appreciated.

100% not a Cotinus...can't give you an answer though.

Looking again the leaves are not right for Cotinus so I'm with Badfish

It's Physocarpus, as Scottish said, probably the variety 'Diablo'.

Physocarpus opulifolius 'diablo' as already mentioned. I would prune it back and plant a pale green shrub next to it to really show off the red foliage.

You can prune them back in summer, Steragram - I do one every year after its flowered and keep it half the size of the one in the picture above.
