What animal would dig the soil out of my big plant pot in the garden? What a mess - woke up to a pile of soil and plants not eaten but just flattened.

Squirrel? Though more usually, they bury things or dig out a bit of soil at this time of year, rather than the whole lot.

Hi Delahuj and welcome to GoY. Given that you live in Sweden could it have been a bear? What was in the pot as I know bears do dig up certain plants.

Unless there is a can of beer or a box of chocolates in the bottom of the pot, a bear is unlikely. I'm thinking more in line of a badger looking for grubs or bumblebee nest and yes, there are badgers in Sweden. But then, you may find a bear at the far end of your property sitting down having a beer whilst eating a box of chocolates:)

The brown bears in Bulgaria dig up the field gentians to eat the roots - no idea why but I know they do. We found the holes where they had been digging whilst out walking.

Squirrels used to do this a lot in our garden, but now I cover the compost with stones, and they leave well alone.

How do I say thanks?
