Apart from getting down on you're hands and knees and ripping, digging at the pesky prolific persistent ivy, is there an effective method of clearing the ivy without killing the rest of the vegetation ?ie,

Sadly no. I spend as much time removing Ivy as any other weed. Trouble is that the flowers provide a really good late feed for bees to stock up on for winter and then you get lots of fruit and of course the birds spread the seeds all over the place.
You can try painting the ivy leaves with weed killer, mixed with a little liquid soap to make it stick, but it is almost as much a bind as pulling the plants out.
At least the roots are not persistent like say bindweed or couch grass. Nor do they have tap roots like Ash or Sycamore.

I am so pleased to think other people are struggling with ivy as well! Can empathise with the knees and hips Seaburngirl!
My back fence (not actually mine) is completely smothered in ivy which I make a point of removing every second year--such a dusty, dirty job. I pull up all the roots I can find on my side but it's a never ending task as the ivy is three times as thick on the other side!
