will laurel plants and berries harm goats and sheep?

I've just googled your question and it says 'Yes'. Do the same and it will tell you more about which types of laurel are toxic.

When you say laurel, do you mean cherry laurel or other members of the Prunus genus or bay laurel from the Laurus genus?

The latter has been reported as causing contact dermatitis but is otherwise harmless.

The former is toxic and there are case reports of poisoning in sheep and cattle.

Like all plant toxins, the situation is complex depending on the particular circumstances and the animal concerned. Dose and palatability are important.

Ruminants tend to suffer more easily because there is more time for their digestive systems to perform the chemical reactions necessary to convert the plant materials to cyanide but non-ruminants have been known to be poisoned.

In one case, sheep had eaten cherry laurel foliage but it was thought that this might have been because there was very little else for them.

It may be, therefore, that this is another plant that is the last choice for grazing animals.

All of which means that you can easily find people telling stories of mass deaths from the smallest amount balanced by stories about people who claim their animals have thrived on a diet of cherry laurel.

I wouldn't willingly give animals access to cherry laurel but neither would I get into a panic if I found that they had been in a place where it was also present. I would, of course, remove them from that area.
