Thanks Derek, I'll just have to see if they flower next year.

I'm just wondering if the soil is actually over rich for them - these grow wild in Turkey in free draining, sunny hot spots, and I'm pretty sure the soil's not that rich in nutrients. Some plants respond to high humus levels by just growing leaves and not flowering, so don't add any more 'good' stuff to the ground next year and see what happens.

Do you think they would prefer sandy soil? If not, I'll do as you say and neglect those areas when I'm adding compost or general fertiliser. I did use tomato food this year but perhaps that was the wrong thing to do.

They like loamy or sandy or gritty soils, they do not like heavy clay - it needs to be free draining. It's worth a try, not adding compost and certainly not feeding them next year, and if that doesn't work, either the soil's too heavy or they're just not getting enough sun.
