hosepipes, what type is the best?

West Midlands, United Kingdom Gb

Hosepipes, what type is the best? I have a wall mounted reel and a hose pipe that is supposed not to kink. It is a willful creature, and no matter what I do, as soon as i turn my back on it, it's mangling a plant. I have thought of dumping it for a lighter weight pipe on a reel that I would carry round, but don't understand quite how they work. Any ideas anyone????

A wall mounted reel is probably the best solution - the "cart" type are a bit of a pain to wind the hose back on again because you have to keep your foot on them to stop them jumping about and falling over. I'm wondering what you mean by "no kink" hose - is it that type that looks like a telephone connector, the bit between the receiver and the base, on a fixed line? Like a spiral? Cos they're a pain in the proverbial, just like the flat ones are. Try replacing the hose with a perfectly ordinary round one.

No Bamboo, not a springy spiral, mine is the sort that must have some sort of wire mesh lining or something, it is round, but hard to manouvre. Do you think the ordinary black rubber sort are best?

never used one like yours, so can't really compare - best one I've come across in a client's garden is a Hozelock ordinary yellow hose on a wall mounted reel.

I have one like Bornagain and the last time I used it a few days ago, it kept kinking. Next door have a yellow one. I will probably have to water for them, as it will be so hot, and they have gone away till Sunday. They have a new yellow one on a reel. I will be able to sample what its like to roll out and useand reel in again.

Good let me know Dorjac, I wonder could I use the same reel if I just bought a new hose?

Don't see why not

I have a wallmounted Gardenia hosepipe, it doesen't kink and you just give it a tug to wind back in unkinked lol BUT! its expensive, £70 25mtr and £90/100 50mtr.. Hub thinks a hozelock wallmounted would be just as good and a bit cheaper...Ive tried them all and spent a lot of money on them, so 2 year ago i decided to buy a real good one to save in the long run.. Good luck with whichever you choose Bornagain..

i think its all to do with the hot weather and the nature of the hose on a real . i find a normal hose as such but the slightly more expensive ones are best . its all in putting it away properly . i find that keeping the water running while i wind mine in and like a fishing real feeding the hose left to right is the answer though whatever you use none are fale safe from the odd kink . the flat ones i think are rubbish and the ones like telephone wire as bamboo sais are a real pain to . you could ofcourse get a watering system of black pipes that stay in place and even have a timer though id feal a bit disconected from my garden with a timer . this obviously wont kink and works realy well as the black rubber tube is actualy poures excuse my spelling and expensive . you can also put it under your lawn if you have one .

Thanks everyone, it seems that there is no 'best' for everyone. I think the one I want has not been invented yet,. I think I'm being so careful, but when I turn round my hose has leapt on an unsuspecting plant, and flattened it:-( Perhaps it's the hose handler that needs changing lol:-)

You're not walking round with the spray gun attachment and watering the garden, are you, Bornagain? Just the pots?

1 Jul, 2010

lol

I don't have a spray gun Bamboo, but I am watering the garden as everything is newly planted and been living in pots until last week or so and we've had a heat wave. Some are far too big and advanced to come out of their temporary homes, so I've just dug holes and put the big pots full of some of my old perennials in them. Naturally I have had to buy loads of new plants too:-)

Get yourself a sprinkler, one of those little ones on a spike for pushing into the soil which doesn't oscillate or move. Nothing needs watering every day, does much better left for 4 or 5 days in a heatwave and then given 45 minutes soak with a sprinkler. And has the advantage of your hose not strangling stuff cos you're not walking round with it. Only exception is potted plants, which will need more water more often.

Thanks Bamboo, I'll look into it, never had a sprinkler:-)

the other option which i use but not on the lawn is as bamboo sais weight till they need a water and i just lay the hose in different places for a while then move it . this has the added bonus of not getting beeds of water on the leaves that can then let the sun scorch them .i often water in the middle of the day using this way .my garden if you look on my blogs is doing great .here is a link to my garden i filmed the other day . take care bye for now .

I got in next door after WD40 on front doorlock but did not use hose. Just watered one or two plants with the can. When I went back in the kitchen Spooky, the street moggy, had taken an opportunity to view yet another property, with a view to taking up residence, on her terms of course. Good job I went in the lounge to look at birthday cards! Earlier, a neighbour had shooed her out of snoozing in the road........she got 'scratched with a smile'. She went in our front door and out the back, drink of water, few old cat bits, and off to sleep on top of a 12 foot wall......some cat.

Does no-one own her Dorjac? What happened to the great hosepipe experiment lol? :-)

2 Jul, 2010

Hi Bornagain.Maybe she has a specific owner, but some cats like mulitple owners, and touring around a bit, specially in this weather. Quite apart from that she has a mind of her own and goes where SHE wants. Might have been difficult to get her to leave the house.....so what with dodgy door and naughty cat I decided not to test drive the hose. When they come back I'll ask about it and give it a go.

hello born again how are you this fine sunny day . there are actualy 3 pups mate lol .my mums having one and a friend is having another and believe it or not im meeting a goy member forom glasgow tomorrow called skillen as her friend is having the other one . its so importent to me the good home part and i know all these 3 lovley puppies are going to have cracking homes . ones called zebadee and one is called le le . as yet the other bitch has know name . the quick way to watch these is to left click near the end of the link.drag the curser along with your finger holding the button down . this will make the link or any word turn blue . you right click on that and select copy . then you go to google or utube and right click in the search bar and the link will majicaly apear there after pressing paste sorted . this will help you with many aplications including pictures and whole pages of text etc. take care bye for now . the best way realy is to go to utube and put nosey potter in the search bar and it will come up with all my films if your interested.take care bye for now .

Hi Bornagain again. Been nextdoor to water. Hose is a Hoselock one on a smallish green portable reel. Easy to wind in and does not seem to kink. It is bright yellow and has a dimpled surface......give it 5 stars.....no Spooky today, nowhere to be seen.

2 Jul, 2010

Thanks Dorjac, you are a star:-)

Hi Nosey, I think for now I'll try the 'Nosey Potter' route on you tube, but will practise my copying and pasting too, thanks for that:-)))
